Geoff Taylor (Goldsmith & Jeweller)

My work as a Goldsmith and Jeweller started in 1968 and captured my interest for what will soon be five decades. During this period my study, practice and development my own creative approach to the many aspects of this incredible art have been deeply satisfying.

Carving wax for casting holds a paramount place for me as it lends itself to such fluid forms, but much of my work is done directly in precious metal. Many aspects of this art are touched on as part of the learning process including hot forging silver, enameling, engraving, casting of bronze and precious metals, and inlaying of different materials.

It comes as a great satisfaction to me when a client entrusts me to create a piece of jewellery. Listening to what a clients wants and then to interpret their wishes is often a challenge and needs fullness of attention. I pride myself on doing what others don't do and I strive to create a piece of jewellery that is unique, well crafted and exceeding expectations.

For me creativity arises from a still mind, where one can visualize a design and work to manifest that into form. From this point changes are possible and feedback from the client helps refine the outcome further before it is created in metal using a mix of traditional and modern techniques.

The true joy of this work lies in this perpetual flow of creativity and is the very thing that has kept my love for this work alive over the past years, giving me satisfaction and fulfillment day to day. A man who works with his hands is truly free, as mastery is not an end but an experience whenever we are fully connected in the present moment.
